My Experience With Sponsoring A Race Car
Some of you are aware that this year I decided to sponsor a race car at one of the local tracks here near Pittsburgh. For a few bucks I got my logo for AmericanInfidelTshirts.com on the front on the open wheel modified #9 car of Rick Huffman at Motordrome.Sponsoring this car was done for long term advertising purposes. It isn’t being done for a quick bang for my buck and I’ve already committed to doing it again next year. So far it has not netted a total return on investment but based on tracking of where my orders are coming, the first step of putting the logo on the car is having some effect on sales. I have also gotten several emails from people that have loved the site even though they haven’t bought anything. That’s a good thing as well. Word of mouth is a great advertising tool.
Now it is time for phase two. This Friday we are going to be giving away t-shirts during the autograph session for the track drivers.
The sponsoring of the racecar and the logo on the car served the purpose to get people interested in that car and its driver. Because when people are interested in those things, it makes it easier to get the guerilla advertising campaign (phase 2) going. That phase two is handing out t-shirts with the site name/logo and car number on them. If people like the car, have the t-shirt and wear the t-shirt they can get in front of thousands of other people in a month beyond just those at the track.
And that’s one of the keys to advertising; maximizing your exposure by mixing techniques. Sure only the people at the track are going to see and hear about AmericanInfidelTshirts.com from the car. But when those people that are now interested in the car proudly wear the shirt out in public you reach an audience far greater than just those people at the track.
