Webcraft.in reveals the secret tricks of website search engine optimization.General mistakes that lead to poor search engine results. You’ll learn about the techniques that have been used, or are being used to improve the search engine rankings but that are outside of the search engine general guidelines. Never Imagine that all search engines are the one and same! What makes today Google happy; will not guarantee you a ranking with ask overture inktomi Yahoo MSN and the other engines. Not staying within guidelines – Search engines have guidelines that need to be followed strictly. Just reviewing them can help you avoid making a costly mistake. There is the Google guilde lines for webmaster, and the Google guidelines for SEO . There is the Yahoo content quality guidelines and advise to improve Yahoo rankings. Indexing and content guidelines for MSN search.

At the same time what make the Yahoo and MSN happy might get ignored by Google. You can not fulfill the task of an SEO in an hour or so.Its a routine business for you. Search Engine Optimization is a naked double-edged sword — it can do good or do bad, always depends on what SEO measures ,you take to improve your search engine positions. Basically SEO is a very slow process, if you commit few mistakes along SEO way, or in the beginning, Individual search engines will always want to do something different to satisfy their consumers better than the other search engines out there. Most of the search engines are in a business too.

Golden Mini-Net Strategy Every page must have a unique HTML page title. The HTML page title contains your target keywords. Every page contains 200 or more words of HTML text. HTML text on the page contains your exact target keywords. Every page can be reached from the home page of the site by following HTML. Text links (not pull-downs, login screens, or pop-up windows). The HTML text links from other pages on site to page contain your target keywords. Use of site map properly SEO Mistakes and Usual Pitfalls

Same meta description (and keywords) on every page.Never have the same title element on every page.Better avoid it.Try to have some different keyword & description on each page. Not utilizing meta data ? While meta data may not be weighed as heavily as in the past it still help to determine a web pages relevance. Make sure you use Title, Description, and Keywords Meta tags . Think of your Meta data as your 1st chance for your web site to make a good impression.

Take use of Alphabetically Advantaged Titles. Bad Title tag ? We see a lot of site just using their company name, or the same title for every page. It is ok to use the company name but we recommend using it after your keyword phrase, for example {Keyword Phrase ? Company Name} or look at our homepage title tag Never stuff keywords in your meta tags, image alt tags, etc. *The Hidden Form Tags: <Input> and <Option> Never use the tricks to stuff keywords in your page footer with lightly-colored or hidden text.

No Keyword Spamming and Spamdexing.Very soon you will be punished by the search engines. No use of keyword or keyword phrase ? We often get questions wondering why a page does not rank for certain phrases. For a search engine to rank your page for your targeted keyword, you need to use phrase a certain number of times and position that keyword properly in the body text.

Targeting wrong keywords or not enough ? Knowing what your customers are looking for is most important. This is why we recommend using paid inclusion like Google Ad-words and Overture. They bring traffic plus they are a great research tool to find your most effective keyword phrases.

Invisible and Semi-Visible Text Always Use of the Comment Tag *The logic of H tags,H2,H2,H3.The <H1> tag is your second most important tag than the other tags. Never use more than 1 instance of an <H1> tag per page *Use multiple <H2> and <H3> tags where appropriate Information Pages Avoiding the Site map.Ohh better have it,rather than avoiding it. Site Map:Bad site navigation ? if your site visitors can not find your good content they will leave quickly. Use a site map and make it easy for users to find what they are looking for.

Duplicate content and Duplicate Meta description. Content is the king.Try to have authentic contents for your sites but not the duplicate one. This is important because your content is valuable and you should better keep it concentrated Never use this tricks of Redirect Pages,it harms your image.

SEO Mistake #1 Using Link Farms.Basically most search engines theory is to consider link farms to be low in quality. No backlinks ? Search engines use the sites that link to your site as a vote of importance and relevancy. You should attempt to get good relevant links for other important web sites. The best way to get good natural incoming links is to have good content. Try to offer useful information and services, give other site owners a reason to links to you.

Bad anchor text (the text that is your underlined link) ? Now it is good to use your company name for your link anchor text, but you also want to vary it and use your keyword phrases. Use of paid links – We learned our lesson the hard way.

Do not be a dead end – Have links to other useful relevant web sites. Do not link to bad neighbors – Be careful whom you link to. Make sure you must link to quality relevant sites, use common sence when linking to other web sites. Poor Grammar and Spelling. Spend some time on it or hire a professional help. Optimization for Relevant and Off-Topic Keywords

Overuse of images and flash animations on your site. Flash ? Everybody like flash and think it can be a useful presentation tool; most web sites do not properly deploy it into their web pages. The search engines unfortunately are not able to index content or navigation that is embedded in a flash file. Use of CSS to Conceal Text and Links on the Page No robots.txt file ? Must Use it.The robots file tells the search engine spiders where to go and not to go. By not having this file your entire site may not be fully indexed in the search engines. You can view a site robots file by entering www.site-name.com/robots.txt here is what our robots.txt file looks like. No Directory listing -Must try Dmoz or the open directory project a volunteer group of editors. Google’s directory is based on dmoz and is a very important incoming link. After you submit to dmoz be prepared to wait a while. Although it does cost $299, webcraft.in recommends a directory listing in Yahoo. This is a trusted human edited link source plus Yahoo is the #2 search engine and the #1 web site overall for web traffic. Still you think that some thing missing,,let me know:I will be more happy to add that.

Much has been written about link popularity and many a Webmaster will have spent hours or even days figuring out how best to improve their standing. If we concentrate on the top search engine such as Google, Yahoo and MSN, we find that link popularity is calculated as part and parcel of their complex algorithms and basically represents a measure of how many web pages link to a particular site. This in turn suggests how to establish an order of rank when viewed against sites that
compete in a similar area. Yahoo and MSN have both lagged behind Google when it comes to utilising link popularity, but in light of stiff competition they have had little choice but to re-jig their algorithms.

The Google Page Rank tool can help to shine some light the popularity of your pages, but should not be considered a comprehensive mirror of link popularity. Firstly it’s perhaps worth noting that Google only updates the page rank every 3 or 4 months. Therefore if your pages are not yet ranked it may be that Google has not yet got round to doing them. Furthermore, getting a page rank of 0 (zero) doesn’t mean that your website totally stinks. Page rank 0 simply means your site is in the system and awaiting a more meaningful score once Google has had time to monitor and ascertain how your site measure up.

We all talk heavily about Google as this engine is currently responsible for much more potential traffic than any other. Many Webmasters have built up inbound links with only this one this search engine in mind. But gaining links to a website is a good idea regardless of any search engine algorithm. The old fashioned idea of cultivating link partners as a means to gain traffic from the click throughs, still has plenty of merit. The general rule to remember is that generally speaking – any link is a good link.

Developing a successful link strategy can take a lot of time and effort. One common mistake is to jump to conclusions too quickly. As Google moves at it’s own pace, anything done to a website today can take a number of days, weeks or months to show up. Much depends upon whether we are talking about new pages or modifications to old established pages. Often search results will move from being top 10 to nowhere and perhaps back again. New pages are particularly volatile. This is because Google recognises that new pages will have little by the way of links to them and so effectively grants a pass. After approximately 30 – 40 days Google checks to see if any links have been built to the page in question. Failure to gain any links suggests the page will be relegated to Google’s supplemental listing, while those with links will remain in the main index. Generally it appears that any new page will take up to 90 to 180 days to gain some degree of page rank after first going live.

There is no real secret to gaining link popularity and in turn page rank. Unless you adopt a ridiculously spammy approach 9 times out of 10 your efforts will be rewarded with some positive movement. The approach you take can vary from simple link exchanges, article syndication or by targeting directories. There are of course many other approaches, but the main thing is to take action and to keep it going over the long term. A high level of focus lasting for just a short period can on occasion do more harm than good. Google is looking for gradual but sustained increases in links to your site. If your efforts only move your site slightly up the rankings then this only goes to prove that your efforts have been too small for the area in which you compete. The only real option is to revise your strategy and double your efforts.

By: Charlie Yeoh from The Marketing Institute Online

Your website’s ranking on search engines is a vital element of your overall marketing campaign, and there are ways to improve your link popularity through legitimate methods. Unfortunately, the Internet is populated by bands of dishonest webmasters seeking to improve their link popularity by faking out search engines.

The good news is that search engines have figured this out, and are now on guard for “spam” pages and sites that have increased their rankings by artificial methods. When a search engines tracks down such a site, that site is demoted in ranking or completely removed from the search engine’s index.

The bad news is that some high quality, completely above-board sites are being mistaken for these web page criminals. Your page may be in danger of being caught up in the “spam” net and tossed from a search engine’s index, even though you have done nothing to deserve such harsh treatment. But there are things you can do – and things you should be sure NOT to do – which will prevent this kind of misperception.

Link popularity is mostly based on the quality of sites you are linked to. Google pioneered this criteria for assigning website ranking, and virtually all search engines on the Internet now use it. There are legitimate ways to go about increasing your link popularity, but at the same time, you must be scrupulously careful about which sites you choose to link to. Google frequently imposes penalties on sites that have linked to other sites solely for the purpose of artificially boosting their link popularity. They have actually labeled these links “bad neighborhoods.”

You can raise a toast to the fact that you cannot be penalized when a bad neighborhood links to your site; penalty happens only when you are the one sending out the link to a bad neighborhood. But you must check, and double-check, all the links that are active on your links page to make sure you haven’t linked to a bad neighborhood.

The first thing to check out is whether or not the pages you have linked to have been penalized. The most direct way to do this is to download the Google toolbar at http://toolbar.google.com. You will then see that most pages are given a “Pagerank” which is represented by a sliding green scale on the Google toolbar.

Do not link to any site that shows no green at all on the scale. This is especially important when the scale is completely gray. It is more than likely that these pages have been penalized. If you are linked to these pages, you may catch their penalty, and like the flu, it may be difficult to recover from the infection.

There is no need to be afraid of linking to sites whose scale shows only a tiny sliver of green on their scale. These sites have not been penalized, and their links may grow in value and popularity. However, do make sure that you closely monitor these kind of links to ascertain that at some point they do not sustain a penalty once you have linked up to them from your links page.

Another evil trick that illicit webmasters use to artificially boost their link popularity is the use of hidden text. Search engines usually use the words on web pages as a factor in forming their rankings, which means that if the text on your page contains your keywords, you have more of an opportunity to increase your search engine ranking than a page that does not contain text inclusive of keywords.

Some webmasters have gotten around this formula by hiding their keywords in such a way so that they are invisible to any visitors to their site. For example, they have used the keywords but made them the same color as the background color of the page, such as a plethora of white keywords on a white background. You cannot see these words with the human eye – but the eye of search engine spider can spot them easily! A spider is the program search engines use to index web pages, and when it sees these invisible words, it goes back and boosts that page’s link ranking.

Webmasters may be brilliant and sometimes devious, but search engines have figured these tricks out. As soon as a search engine perceive the use of hidden text – splat! the page is penalized.

The downside of this is that sometimes the spider is a bit overzealous and will penalize a page by mistake. For example, if the background color of your page is gray, and you have placed gray text inside a black box, the spider will only take note of the gray text and assume you are employing hidden text. To avoid any risk of false penalty, simply direct your webmaster not to assign the same color to text as the background color of the page – ever!

Another potential problem that can result in a penalty is called “keyword stuffing.” It is important to have your keywords appear in the text on your page, but sometimes you can go a little overboard in your enthusiasm to please those spiders. A search engine uses what is called “Keyphrase Density” to determine if a site is trying to artificially boost their ranking. This is the ratio of keywords to the rest of the words on the page. Search engines assign a limit to the number of times you can use a keyword before it decides you have overdone it and penalizes your site.

This ratio is quite high, so it is difficult to surpass without sounding as if you are stuttering – unless your keyword is part of your company name. If this is the case, it is easy for keyword density to soar. So, if your keyword is “renters insurance,” be sure you don’t use this phrase in every sentence. Carefully edit the text on your site so that the copy flows naturally and the keyword is not repeated incessantly. A good rule of thumb is your keyword should never appear in more than half the sentences on the page.

The final potential risk factor is known as “cloaking.” To those of you who are diligent Trekkies, this concept should be easy to understand. For the rest of you, cloaking is when the server directs a visitor to one page and a search engine spider to a different page. The page the spider sees is “cloaked” because it is invisible to regular traffic, and deliberately set-up to raise the site’s search engine ranking. A cloaked page tries to feed the spider everything it needs to rocket that page’s ranking to the top of the list.

It is natural that search engines have responded to this act of deception with extreme enmity, imposing steep penalties on these sites. The problem on your end is that sometimes pages are cloaked for legitimate reasons, such as prevention against the theft of code, often referred to as “pagejacking.” This kind of shielding is unnecessary these days due to the use of “off page” elements, such as link popularity, that cannot be stolen.

To be on the safe side, be sure that your webmaster is aware that absolutely no cloaking is acceptable. Make sure the webmaster understands that cloaking of any kind will put your website at great risk.

Just as you must be diligent in increasing your link popularity and your ranking, you must be equally diligent to avoid being unfairly penalized. So be sure to monitor your site closely and avoid any appearance of artificially boosting your rankings.

There are mainly two ways to draw high traffic to a website:

One way is to use PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising, such as Google Adwords. PPC (with well written ads) will drive you targeted traffic instantly. The only drawback is that it will cost you money (as much as you are willing to pay), but there are some techniques to drive more clicks for less money.

To learn how to use Adwords in a way that will drive you a lot of traffic for less money, I suggest the Google Cash guide. Another recommended guide is >a xhref=”http://eaept1.richjerk.hop.clickbank.net/” mce_href=”http://eaept1.richjerk.hop.clickbank.net/”>Rich Jerk guide. It teaches many useful web marketing techniques in a very humorous but effective way.

It is not recommended to try Adwords campaign without any basic knowledge. If you make mistakes (such as choosing the wrong keywords, the wrong countries or the wrong ads) Google will penalize you by rising your clicks cost, so don’t even consider to try a campaign before reading an expert Google guide.

The second way to draw traffic to your website is to use Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

SEO requires more work, and some patience. It won’t drive you traffic instantly but it has a great advantage over PPC – once your site is optimized and reach a top place in organic search engines, you will receive tons of traffic for free!

Plus, organic search results are considered by most people as more reliable than sponsored results, so they drive more sells.

A well optimized site would take several months to reach a top position (depends on the keywords used and the level of competition).

Gaining a high rank is done by analyzing the competition’s sites SEO properties for your main keywords, and trying to copy their methods and do a little bit better to out rank them.

There are 2 types of search engine optimization techniques:
1. Onpage Optimization
2. Offpage Optimization

Onpage factors include:

Title – The title of the page should include your main keywords and be as short as possible to give them more weight.

Header Tags – You should include your main keywords within header tags, particularly the H1 tag which is usually simply the title of your content. Other keywords should appear in sub-headings, which are your H2 tags. You should also bold and underline these titles containing your keywords.

Keyword Density – You should include your main keywords as often as possible without making the content seem spammy or nonsensical.

Meta Tags / Descriptions – You should use meta tags to write a description of your webpage’s content. This will not appear on the actual webpage, but in the description in the search engine results. It should be compelling so visitors click on the link to your site, as well as including your main keywords for optimization purposes.

Image Tags – If you have any graphics on your site, you should include your main keywords in the alt tag of each image.

Offpage Optimization:

While onpage optimization is still something you should do, it’s NOT what will get you high search engine rankings. It’s the offpage optimization factors that will. This can basically be summed up in one word- LINKS.

Google, and most other search engines, place great emphasis on both the quality and quantity of inward links to your site. You want to get as many links as possible, but you should place more emphasis on getting quality links from sites similar in subject to your own, and from pages with high page rank (PR).

Offpage parameters include:

- Which websites link to you

- The number of websites linking to you

- The PR of the website linking to you

- The page title of the website linking to you

- The anchor text used in the link linking to you

- The number and type of links linking to the website that’s linking to you

- The number of outbound links on the website that is linking to you

- The total number of links on the website that is linking to you

- Whether or not the websites linking to you are deemed by Google as an authority website

Doing search engine optimization can be done manually, but it is very time consuming.

There are several programs that automate SEO processes, such as SEO Elite.

This software will allow you to analyze your competition for any keyword, and will tell you what sites link to them, their respective PR, how valuable each link is in terms of SEO, contact address of link partner and much more. This will enable you to contact these good link partners yourself and get them to link to your site as well.

The software will also allow you to find link partners for any keyword of your choice, as well as checking that all your current link partners are still linking back to you. It will also tell you where you rank in the major search engines for any given keyword.

We often hear people griping and lamenting about how Google, Yahoo, or MSN reduced their site’s rankings, causing a huge loss of profits and business. These people surrender to the fact that their favorite search engine failed them and their business and are resigned to finding another search engine to advertise on, not realizing the real fact that they may just be committing another mistake waiting to happen.

Aside from pitfalls of the site itself, the most common mistake in this type of scenario is simply relying too much on a search engine to rake in the customers. This blatant fact of ignoring other avenues of online marketing is a common practice that leaves many companies and webmasters looking for other full-time employment at more established companies.

This type of SEO is everything perception is most prevalent in businesses that are new to Internet marketing. It should be avoided at the onset and throughout strategies and business plans to attract customers and leads, and Internet marketing and e-commerce should really be separated from other, more established ways of acquiring leads or sales.

Two simple reasons could be pointed out why over-reliance on SEO and search engines will kill your business:

First, search engines arent doing business for you. Theyre doing business for themselves and for their owners. They would not care if your business took a sudden plummet because of your web site’s loss of rankings. It happens by the thousands each day and search engines really could care less.

Secondly, if a search engine vanished or completely changed direction youd be left with nothing. At this point you wouldve lost valuable time and money in focusing all your advertising efforts in that one single search engine.

The bottom line is to diversify your business strategy. You should always have a fallback or contingency plan. If you keep and follow other business tactics aside from SEO, a negative hit on your SEO arsenal will hurt you, but not completely cripple your business. There are other techniques such as e-mail marketing, banner ads, affiliate programs and direct marketing that can play an integral role in your marketing success. These techniques can prove to be as useful or, depending on your exact industry, even more useful than search engine advertising alone.

Some techniques to help you diversify your marketing plans are:

1) Try an offline contact building or ad mailing campaign. Prominently display your website’s URL on printed materials. This would lead people to check out your site, and if they like what they see or find what they need, they may buy from you. Isn’t that what you’re after in the first place?

2) Don’t focus all your strategies on one single technique, such as SEO. As the old adage goes, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. The basket may fall and you’ll break all your eggs. Diversity, diversity, and diversify some more.

3) Never under estimate the power of well-written press releases. There are many excellent online news submission sites that are being monitored by the major search engines. If you have a good press release with a healthy density of those all-important keywords, your press release (and hence your website) will appear on all search engines’ news features.

4) Depending on your specific field of business, there may be online directories or vertical niche sites that cater to your industry. Seek them out and submit articles or press releases to them. Customers looking for information in your industry will find your site if the location is well targeted.

5) Keep your site updated. You may have regular news or features that search engines will quickly pick up. If you syndicate parts of your site, you’ll reach a wider audience. A blogging or comment-type area of your site is good because it allows customers and visitors to write about your services or products, thus increasing content for your site and improving your search results. Theres nothing better than free content, right?

6) Always keep an eye out on the competition. Learn from their tactics. See how their tactics are hurting you or giving you opportunities to offer something more. Then go back and revise your strategies based on what you find out from your opponents.

7) When all has been said and done, it would all boil down to having a website that has keyword-rich content and relevant incoming and outgoing links. Long-term ranking rely on this factor more and more with each passing day. Even if it means hiring a good writer to build your content, do it. The payoff is priceless.

E-commerce, Internet marketing, web business, whatever you may want to call it, might not necessarily be and easy or quick method. In fact, just like conventional avenues of business, it requires as much planning, thinking, and foresight to get the results you are after. The general rules we’ve discussed would go a long way to helping your online business prosper and profit.

As a search engine optimizer, I’ve had a great opportunity to work with many site owners for website submission and optimization services and had some working experiences to share with you in this article. Site owners come from different categories: e-commerce sites, services or personal pages. Some of them have the expertise in Computers and Internet but most of them are the neophytes in the search engine optimization (SEO) religion. So, the purpose of this article is providing novice site owners with some useful rules of behaviors (DOs and DON’Ts) to come along with their SEO campaigns.

* SEO firms DON’T help you out. DO help yourself – Search Engine Optimization process is more and more manipulated and it is becoming the big market nowadays. Many websites are offering SEO service with different costs. They promise that customers’ sites will be on top of search engines. If so, who will be kicked out of the list? No one? So if you are a site owner with a small budget and modest knowledge of SEO, lean on SEO firm as just an advisor. They cannot do all the things for you. To help you out in SEO, do it yourself. In most cases, the site owners will play an important role in the success of SEO campaigns.

* DON’T submit your sites to thousands of search engines and directories – Simply, in reality, there are not even thousands of “engines” to submit to. There are, however, hundreds of search directories, hybrid search engines, free-for-all (FFA) pages and classified ad sites. They are simply a list of unorganized links to the last fifty or so URLs that were submitted to the service. The primary purpose of these sites is to gather email addresses from Web marketers so they can be sent offers for other products and services. By submitting, you are unknowingly giving your consent for them to email you. Some major search engines (e.g.: Google) are not fond of such link farms and may actively ban this type of site.

* Repetitive submissions DON’T improve your rankings in search engines – Many site owners misunderstand between search engine submission and search engine optimization. So they just dig in finding as many as possible free submission services on the Internet and hope that someday their site will be on the top. Search engine submission is just the first step to quickly notify the search engines about the nascence of your site on the Internet. How your site grows or how your site is optimized is more important to search engines to place your site at the top of the search index. So repetitive submissions don’t work in these cases. Take time to pay more attention to your site’s content and link building.

* DON’T try to trick the search engines in any way – The search engines today are smarter than you have ever imagined. The techniques like most times keyword repeated in a row (keyword stuffing), same color text used as the background (hidden text), doorway pages.. are obsolete and they may be against you. Search engines don’t like to get fooled and they may penalize your site for that. Moreover, be careful with the services like automatic link exchange or buying text links. You can use them on your own but take precautions.

* Your websites’ exposures on search engines DON’T mean top rankings and web conversions – Some SEO firms guarantee that your sites will be included in search engines. It is so easy because when your site is indexed, it is included in search engines right away and you can see it there by some simple but useless keywords. No one will find you with that keywords or syntaxes. In addition, pay attention to for which search engines the SEO firms will be optimizing your site. It will be easier to get listed on some less-reputed search engines comparing to Google or Yahoo. On the other hand, distinguish between standard and sponsor listing. You must pay for sponsor listing but get less visitors and sales. So make sure you understand clearly what SEO firms are offering. A successful SEO campaign requires the acumen of site owners as well as a tight cooperation between site owners and optimizers. Before the campaign starts, they should discuss the price, the time for the campaign, keyword selection and the specific search engines for optimization….

* DO get familiar with SEO tools such as search engines, HTML, PageRank – Some site owners lean on the webmasters on every task related to their sites (e.g.: add a text link, change page title). In most cases, the site owners will play an important role in the success of SEO campaign by getting familiar with SEO tools like search engines, HTML, PageRank. Search engines and PageRank evaluation will help you search for competitors’ sites, evaluate the keywords, check sites’ link popularity (number of links to your sites) and link saturation (number of pages on your sites have been indexed). Besides, with HTML basic syntax, you can easily exchange links with other sites on your own and stop calling the webmasters all the time for modifying pages with links.

* DO start writing today – Site owners may be beginners in SEO but experts in their industries. And today, writing is a significant skill to do SEO. Start writing some articles about your business now and submit them with your backlinks (links to your website) to article directories to increase the popularity of your site. For instance, suppose you were a mother at home and managed an ecommerce site selling some strollers and baby accessories. That will be wonderful if your share your experiences in choosing and using the strollers with other mummies-to-be on some women forum and article directories. Not only are search engines notified but also some potential customers will be attracted to your site.

In this article, I’ve provided the site owners with some basic rules of behaviors to do SEO. They include but not limit to myths about Search Engines, SEO firms, importance of SEO tools and article writing skill. Learning them today to make friends with search engines and shove your competitors aside.

I get half of the world traffic for the term “dirtbagging,” on one page of my backpacking site, but that only means ten visitors a month. Without decent keyword demand you can’t ever get much traffic. Total demand is just one factor to consider, though. Here are some others.

1. Demand/supply ratio. There were 289,000 searches for “fishing” last month, but could you compete against the 35,000,000 results on a Google search? “Bass fishing tips,” with 3,700 searches, and 31,000 results is a more likely winner.

2. Total supply. For “dirtbagging,” Google shows 240 results, and there may be 20 searches monthly for the term. It was easy to get on the first page of results. On the other hand, a keyword with a demand of a million, and a million search results has a better ratio, but can you really get in the first few pages of results? Whatever the ratio, you have to be able to compete against the supply. If you are on the tenth page of results, virtually nobody will find you.

3. Type of keyword. Getting good search engine placement is one thing, but what type of visitor are you getting? Who is more likely to buy something from you or click on your affiliate links, a searcher for “fishing stories,” or “fishing poles.” If I was selling gear, I think I’d be happier with half as much traffic for the second term as the first.

4. “Odd” keywords. I optimized my site www.IncreaseBrainpower.com for “brain power,” and later found there was even more traffic for “brainpower.” Both, by the way, are in the dictionary. Look for odd search phrases, but be careful optimizing for misspellings and bad-grammar keywords, if it might hurt the reputation of your site.

5. Value of keyword ads. If you rely partly on Google Adsense for revenue, you may want to consider the ads that will be diplayed for a given keyword. Poetry pages will get you about $0.04 per click, while surveilance cameras can get you $2.00 per click.

A final consideration when doing keyword research is to consider your interest in the topic represented by the keyword. Do you want to write a page on that, and can you deliver what a searcher of that term is looking for?

I look at a lot of sites on a daily basis. There are a lot of common problems I see on sites. Some people may have tags set-up improperly or use tags that have no real purpose. I have compiled a list of the 5 top do-it-yourself SEO errors. It’s safe to say that many do-it-yourselfers may have at least one of these errors on their sites. These should help you omit these often costly mistakes and pull you up in the ranks.

1) Keyword tag – A keyword tag is for keywords, but not for any keywords. You can’t just stuff this tag with keywords that your entire site is related to. The tags should reflect keywords only on that particular page; not the entire site and not every keyword you think your site might be searched on. Also, you should have no more then 20 words in the tag. You should not repeat any word more than 3 times. If you sell tickets, for example, don’t write: Broadway tickets, circus tickets, hockey tickets, boxing tickets and so on. Do use Broadway, circus, hockey, boxing, tickets and so on.

2) Abstract tag – It is sometimes used as a replacement for or combined with a description tag. However, more and more people are using these to stuff keywords. Search engines like Google are interested in what is on the page. More specifically, what visitors can view. In my opinion, the abstract tag has no place on a site.

3) Description Tag – The whole point behind this tag is to describe what the “page” is about. Keywords related to the page should be implemented as well. The limit on words should be 20 – 25. I see many website owners stuffing this tag with keywords, or having a description that is entirely too lengthy. Stay within these guidelines and you will be fine.

4) Title tag – This, to me, is the most important tag. This is the first tag the search engine reads. It tells the search engine what the” page” is about. Don’t put your web address here. Do not add your company name in the beginning of this tag either. It should not exceed 60 characters.

5) Content- If you notice, I have been commenting on relevancy to the “page”, not your overall site. Each page has it’s own keywords. Tag the title tag, description and keyword tags. All of these keywords should be the same. Add them to your content as well. Now your page should be fairly well optimized.

Why do sites fall short? Simple, content is not optimized. Search engines are, for the most part, pretty basic. You type in a search term and it retrieves sites containing those terms while also taking a few other factors into account. So, if your site doesn’t have these terms, how will you be found? You won’t. Over do it with keywords and you will experience the same result, but for different reasons. Sometimes reading everything about SEO can be bad. Trying too many tricks, tips or methods is like too many cooks spoiling the soup. In the end they can do more bad than good. These are very basic rules that should be followed by all. In, doubt? Always consult or hire an SEO professional.

Search engines are better at spidering than you. Of course, you need a professional looking site, easy to navigate, appropriate content and size. Many webmasters and sites are great at displaying graphics (flash) and visually appealing sections on their sites. However, the search engines really don\’t care much about that. If you can give the spiders what they want, they not only will eat it up fast, but you will provide content-rich, relevant data to their index (database). As time, content, size and relevancy increase, you will rise up in the search engine results pages. Properly applied search engine optimization techniques and online marketing principles will help you. (SEO/SEM)

The 3 most important search engines to optimize for are Google, Yahoo, and MSN. (Ed Note: Google owns over 50% of the market today, and is growing fast every day. This includes their exposure via partners like Ask, Earthlink, DogPile, etc). For you to get elevated and relevant rankings you must get into the search engine indexes, and we recommend you start with Google. You should get spidered by Google in less than 3 weeks if applied correctly, but a long term approach to SEO work is needed. You can expect to see your listing within 2-4 months for some rankings, and as much time as 2 years for certain keywords/phrases!

I invite you to take a look at the starter list below. These are steps you can start today – and it\’s fairly easy and impactful.

NUMBER 1: Learn the SEO concepts.

SEO tries to ensure that your web pages appear at the top of the search engines for target keyword requests. It increases brand awareness, qualified traffic and revenue. Fact: Only 1/2 of the people visiting look at the sponsored (paid) ads (PPC) and only 20% of those actually click. However, 4 out of 5 total clicks – apply their mouse on natural search results. Therefore SEO done right can really elevate your business visibility and revenue. Additionally, the top 5 sites returned from any search are where the action is. Your goal? You should be in the top 10 (Search Engines Results Pages (SERPS)) for your selected keywords.

NUMBER 2: Research the competition.

I\’m sure you do this no matter what business you are in – whether online or not (brick and mortar). If not, this is one of the big steps missed by online businesses. There are techniques on how to do this effectively, quickly and with high quality results. Our August article on www.microsaw.com (\”How to blow the competition out of the search game\”) outlines how to do this.

NUMBER 3: Linking Strategies and Relevancy.

One of the most important things you can do is to build out your relevant linking neighborhoods. There are a number of great tools you can use to automate this, but we\’ve found that via email and the phone (we\’re amazed by how many don\’t use the phone) — you will establish a closer relationship with your virtual partners, and even though you may only spend an hour a day building link partners, it\’s well spent. Typically, only 1-2 will exchange links with you out of 8 companies called. However, let\’s say you get one quality link per day through the year. That\’s over 300 quality links that will help your relevancy, build your business and get your PR-level moved (Page Rank).

NUMBER 4: Proper HTML and Site Building.

There are many articles written on this topic. If you are not HTML-savvy, it can be a challenge. However, it\’s not hard to learn, and many tools are available. Just search for free website design tools. Other tools (try webconfs.com) can analyze your content, HTML syntax and appropriate application of tags like H1, META tags, BODY content and more. You must also make notes of server-side issues, including IP numbers that may have belonged to (and still do) block listed ranges.

NUMBER 5: Meet The Search Engines.

Make sure you read the webmaster\’s guidelines on all the search engines, especially Google, Yahoo and MSN. They actually are very helpful, and they want you to do well, contrary to what you believe or have heard. Also, keep in mind, there are robotic search engines, algorithmic based search engines and AI-type search engines – different styles of writing. Additionally, you must include listings in the directories, like DMOZ (free, but takes weeks to get listed), Yahoo (free, months – or paid, immediate). Lastly, you must study and learn the PPC (pay-per-click) strategies, learn how to write ads, copy writing for (cash) landing pages, and have a solid back-end sales process. If you have never used the AdSense programs, you may be missing out on *significant* income, but many do it incorrectly. We have seen adsense programs go from $3.00/day to over $19,000/month!

NUMBER 6: Use a proven methodology.

None of the SEO \”white hat\” (opposite to \”black hat\” – unethical) strategies are rocket-scientists-qualified only. The key areas to keep working on are: a) keyword research, b) competitive analysis, c) analyze your own site(s), d) submit your site(s), e) monitor rankings, f) Reporting, g) link development and h) dynamic site mapping. This approach works, and used by many of the professional SEO companies in the industry.

NUMBER 7: Learn how to use the SEO tools.

Metaphor: For many home-owners, the worst thing that can happen when approaching any project, large or small – is not having your tool belt with you. Even worse, if there are tools missing from your belt after spending 5 minutes retrieving the ladder, lining it up just right, scaling it just to get to the top of the roof — you not only feel aggravated, but stupid. Being affiliated with some of the guru-type tools & specialists in the industry is nice, but most people are not. Therefore, free tools are a good place to start. These will help you get to work immediately, and you don\’t have to come down off the roof to get them.

NUMBER 8: Relevancy, Relevancy, Relevancy? Why be \”search relevant\”?

The objective here is to make the search engines \”see\”. You must always ensure that you insert unique relevant content such that the page becomes more worthy of a high ranking in the search engines. You must also make sure you adhere to Style Guide Requirements. The ultimate objective is not to make an inferior page appear superior, but to actually make it superior. Yes, you must be relevant – for any site – be it a commerce/shopping type site, to an information page about Da Vinci\’s life (and, you have something to sell for your bottom line is good). Do not try any tricks, especially not on the search engines. You will regret it. There are too many sad stories of revenues and business lost from \”black hat\” strategies. They appear to work for a little while, and suddenly you are gone from the listings. Be relevant and ethical. It may take a little longer, but you will win out in the end.Author:

The Internet is a visual medium, but this simple truth may be lost on us in this current era of Search Engine Optimization when text content is king. However when it comes to delivering a message intuitively and immediately, a picture, an image, or graphic design is worth a thousand words. Online casinos (much like land-based casinos have had for decades) spearheaded the amalgamation of sales, entertainment, and aesthetic experience, by employing smart graphic design. Internet gambling is the most prosperous industry on the web; therefore marketing agents of all fields must ask what do online casinos do right – What is the key to successful promotional design?

Much like the evolution of casino software, which I have covered in a previous article, the development of computer hardware and improvement of internet connections has set the tone when it comes to advances in web design. At the early stages of the industry websites were not much different from conventional printed pages. As time went by entered powerful graphic programs and animation players, but the designers giddy with their new toy box unfortunately tended to ignore technological limitations. Eager to amaze the user with what then probably seemed like endless possibilities left a legacy of elongated Flash presentations that either took too much time to load, required the user to install new players every couple of weeks, were too heavy for the user’s PC, or d) all of the above. Till this very day I often click on Skip out of pure habit, and I’m sure many users share the same Pavlovian response.

Successful online casinos, constantly keeping practicality in mind avoided these traps. Convenience and intelligibility have always been and always will be the building blocks of smart user interfaces; this is a key factor in your visitor’s subconscious choice or deliberate decision to return to your site or shun from it.

Nowadays files and images load within seconds and web designers can produce sites that are both user friendly and visually pleasing. Although the novelty has not fully expired, designers now curb their enthusiasm and present tamer designs rather than bombing the user with extravagant colors and nonstop visual affects. This approach pays relatively demure design proves itself effective in terms of establishing reliability and a feel of genuine quality, or in a word – class.

A short survey of today’s top online casinos demonstrates that industry leaders save the razzle-dazzle for the casino software and games, and maintain a rather cool front. Instead of overwhelming the first time visitor, casinos in the know create an inviting sophisticated ambiance. Examples for the polished look can be found in CasinoTropez.com, Bodog.com, and www.Money-Casino.com . The refined touch is achieved by employing the eternal elements of art and beauty, much like in classical painting: harmonious colors, proportional measures, and lucid idea flared by a tint of the unexpected; such as a shade that seems at odds with the primary color plate or careful placement of 3D components. This formula inspires a blended sense of security and excitement.

The idea behind this style is to create an eye candy, but avoid making your visitors nauseous you can have them swooning over your games later, but first make an elegant entrance. Nonetheless designers do get their chance to run a little wild and turn on their creative juices with advertising material. Although the site should uphold a dignified appearance, banners and mailers can be more humorous and sassy. An example of playful mailers can be found at http://www.money-casino.com/Promotions/Email_Offers/index.html . With eye catching images, uncommon fonts, and visual or literal puns, mailers communicate pure fun and inject fresh energy to your relationship with the user.

Of course, not all online casinos are free from design foibles. Many websites simply get lost in the shuffle as they do not offer a unique visual experience and stick to tired color plates or outdated templates, while others just stick out like a sore thumb. Currently Search Engine Optimization methodologies demand that text be given precedence over graphic design, and more often than not the finished product proves that this technology impinges heavily on the creative vision. I would address website owners facing this dilemma by paraphrasing the words of maverick architect Buckminster Fuller: When you work on a problem don’t think about beauty, but if your solution isn’t beautiful, know it is wrong.

We are human. Our eyes guide us. Wherever we go we seek aesthetic pleasure and forever respond to beauty. Smart marketing strategies are based on endowing the users with an experience that surpasses the mere product, the chance to feast their eyes on a taste of the exquisite.
