The .2% Doctrine

People think that selling T-shirts online is some sort of “get rich quick” scheme. It is not. What it is is a business if you chose to make it into one and it is a time sink that won’t make you a dime if you chose to make it into that as well.
This article is entitle “The .2% Doctrine” because that is about how many people that open an online T-shirt store though any of the online one-off producers make money at it. Many people do not open stores to make money. They open them to simply make some cool stuff for themselves and their friends and family. Many more invest a couple weeks and maybe a couple months and do not get anywhere, maybe make a couple small sales and then pack it in. Still more stick with it for longer and struggle to sell more than 5 items a month and make little more than $20 a month. But that “.2%” is the percent that succeed in at least generating enough revenue in a given month to make a check appear in their hand. (more…)

Worry About Total Revenue - Not Markup

Often times when I am perusing the message boards I see people who own an online t-shirt store asking what their “markup” should be. For the uninitiated, the way many of the sites that provide one off t-shirt printing services for businesses work is that items they make for your customers have a “base price” which includes their costs and you, as a shop owner, place on top of that a “markup” which is how much you want to charge and be paid when someone buys your designs.
